Transcript: Why North Carolina is the #1 State for Business – What This Means for Real Estate in WNC

Renae: Hi there, I'm Renae Gregoire.

Craig: And I'm Craig Gregoire.

Renae: We are the 828 Living Team here in Western North Carolina, and we just found out about a study that named North Carolina the best state for starting a business! The study was conducted by B2B Reviews, and this ranking is a big deal because it directly influences job growth, real estate demand, and economic development—especially here in Western North Carolina.

Craig: Some of the key factors in this ranking included tax policies, economic health, business survival rates, and workforce strength. North Carolina excelled in all these areas, making it a prime location for business owners and professionals.

Renae: Here’s a quick look at North Carolina’s scores, based on a scale of 25 points:

  • Taxes: 18.84

  • Business Growth & Survival: 22.63 (#2 in the country!)

  • Economy: 14.02

  • Workforce: 18.10

Even though our economy score is slightly lower, it didn’t hold us back—North Carolina still ranked #1 overall!

Craig: This ranking creates a lot of opportunities for home buyers, investors, and sellers. More businesses mean more jobs, and more jobs increase housing demand. That’s a major driver of a strong economy, and it keeps property values rising. The fact is, Western North Carolina is a hot market for real estate.

Renae: Let’s talk about the rankings. The top five states for starting a business were:

  1. North Carolina

  2. Ohio

  3. Texas

  4. Indiana

  5. Florida

It’s incredible that North Carolina outperformed major economic powerhouses like Texas and Florida! More and more investors and business owners are choosing North Carolina over traditional business hubs.

Craig: On the other end of the spectrum, the worst states for business growth were:

  • Hawaii

  • Idaho

  • Kansas

  • New York

  • New Jersey

Some of these states have high taxes and a high cost of living, which makes them less attractive for new businesses. That’s why many businesses are relocating to North Carolina.

Renae: These rankings are great news for home buyers and sellers in Western North Carolina. Increased job growth means higher demand for homes, and a business-friendly climate attracts out-of-state buyers. Rising home values make Western NC a great investment.

For sellers—take advantage of this growing market! It’s still a seller’s market, especially here in Hendersonville, Asheville, and throughout Western North Carolina.

For buyers—get in now while prices are where they are, because home values will likely continue to rise.

Craig: Western North Carolina combines business growth and lifestyle appeal. We have a thriving small business community, an affordable cost of living, and a strong job market. This region is attracting remote workers, entrepreneurs, and investors who want both economic opportunity and quality of life.
